I‘ve really only ever used chavant NSP (oil based) clays, and store bought tool sets. I see a lot of artists make their own tools and utilize items not designed for sculpting. What do YOU use? why do you like them?
Adam Beane was my teacher. I won the opportunity to take that class as I was a runner up on the 2018 next level of cosplay scholarship. I met Lee Joyner and Ve Neill during that experience <3 It was one of the best times of my life.
I took the Creature Maquette Sculpting class at Cinema Makeup School and find out I actually love sculpting. I use chavant medium and I find out those "ears and pimple popper kits" from beauty stores work great as sculpting tools too.
Ken is the best!! I got to learn from him a bit when I was briefly working on something at an effects house out here. We still keep in touch. I learned about the Titanic rollers from him actually. I haven't used them yet but I'm glad to hear another vote for the positive for them!!
You'll get major mileage out of normal sculpting sets and tools just like many non-prosthetic sculptors use (think the stuff and kits from your average art/hobby shop).
As far as some brands that have (imo) fantastic sculpting tools that I think people should check out: Cutting Edge https://cuttingedgesculpture.com/
Two of the best homemade tools I've learned about are from a mentor of mine (Josh Turi, he's an amazing prosthetic artist and rad dude🙂 Def give him a follow. He uploads educational content pretty regularly) and cool guy Superken! A wire dog brush, and plastic window screening (for smoothing down edges~).
When it comes to clay I'm basic lol Good ol chavant nsp med and WED clay for most things.
I like clays that are medium-i like some pliability in my clay. As far as tools, I have used bought sculpting tools, canned air, scrubby pads, coffee stirrers- you name it. I think it's just a matter of finding just the right size and shape for what you are doing. Here's a fun tip- the little stopper Starbucks puts in your coffee? The ends can be great for pore texture. I love sculpting so much!!

But my favorite go tos are tiny tiny wire tools/guitar tools, and rubber end tools.

I recently discovered using a lemon zester when sculpting. It’s great for shaving away clay and evening symmetry before smoothing things out.
